Windsurfers are currently the fastest sailing craft holding the world speed record at an incredible 49.09 Knots (56.49mph or 90.91kph)

See below for video of Antione Albeau setting the current world record in spring 2008.

Windsurfers have always liked going fast, regardless of if it's on your own or blasting along with friends we all like to feel the excitement of going fast.  Most recreational windsurfers will be doing 20 - 25 knots (23-28mph) most of the time

With advances in modern technology you can now find out how fast your going with a small GPS unit, this has lead to many windsurfers recording their speeds and posting them online.  Leading the way with this is the GPS-Speedsurfing website which allows anyone to upload there gps data and see it ranked againsit other users all over the world.  More at:  http://www.gps-speedsurfing.com

In the UK we also have the Weymouth speedweek every October and a last year saw the start of a new event called Driven By Wind which is aiming to break the 50 Knot barrier in the UK at the Ray near Southend.
